The author and taz journalist Fatma Aydemir released her debut novel, “Elbow”, in 2017. She writes of the near 18 year-old, Hazel, from Berlin-Wedding, who is searching for her place in the world. Hazel is unfortunate enough to continually experience violence on many levels. She hits back. She flees to Turkey, her parent’s birth land, yet even there she feels no belonging.
In her book, Aydemir describes mechanisms of ostracism and exclusion. The pain clutches tight and digs deep, impossible to ignore. We’re happy to welcome Aydemir to KOI to discuss her book and its relation to the Biennale discourse. Who’s talking here, and from which perspective? How can art function without excluding?
